Speakers : Grundig

Grundig 22 cm coaxial speaker with CKS magnet

This particular speaker shares the fate of many of his brothers: The foil of the electrostatic tweeter is broken. Picture one provides a nice view into the tweeter chamber. (> See "Grundig 22 cm coaxial speaker" on page "Projects"). One interesting detail about the early fifties Grundig speakers is the material of the butterfly dampers. It seems to be made of a kind of plastic material. Other speaker companies used "Pertinax" as material for the dampers. Pertinax is made of paper and artificial phenolic-formaldehyd resin. Another Pertinax was Publius Helvius Pertinax (*126 + 193), proclaimed Roman emperor the morning after the assasination of Commodus in the year 192. I doubt that Commodus was poisoned with formaldehyd though. You find a picture of a marble bust of emperor Pertinax below. With a broken nose! He must have been killed during a boxing competition.
