Studio Loudspeaker made by H.E. Krieger around 1960 - deteriorated surrounds (5)

This is the condition of the woofer's surrounds we found years ago. The interesting thing is that these woofers used to have surrounds made of rubber foam of this particular sort! We don't know of any other drivers which were equipped with this large-pore sort of foam at such an early date! Perhaps some of you might know an earlier example ?

Anyway, when it got to restoring the surrounds we didn't just rely on easy to find off-the-shelf surrounds. No No! We wanted to get as close to the original as possible. So we sent samples of the crumbled left overs of the original surrounds to various companies who deal with the production of rubber foam. In the end it was the company BASF who did a microscopic analysis of the samples and concluded that they did indeed have an almost identical sort of rubber foam from current production with almost likewise properties. Amazingly this BASF rubber foam is intended for accoustic dampening of concert halls - what a (somewhat funny) coincidence!

BASF was kind enough to send over some 40 x 40 X 0,3 cm sheets of this material and it was Mr. R.S. from near Cologne who did the great job of cutting new surrounds and fitting them to the cones of the woofers.
