Note the insect bites on the felt ring in picture three bottom line. Real felt is made of animal hair (the best felt, used for the Italian Borsalino hats, is made of rabbit hair), some insect larvae love it! You will find this phenomenon in many of the felt rings of old speakers. Sometimes there are also little holes in the paper cone due to insect bites, but luckily the beasts seem to prefer the felt. In the old days the engineers used organic glues to stick the cone edge to the frame. These glues are also a 'favourite dish' of insect larvae. Traces of time...
